Surveillance and body camera footage from the Ross County Sheriff’s Office captures the tense moments leading up to an exchange of gunfire between a man and a deputy in Chillicothe. The incident unfolded around 5 p.m. on Thursday when 42-year-old Nicholas Mitchell approached the back entrance of the sheriff’s office, initially appearing to seek assistance.
In the footage, Mitchell is seen pacing in the parking lot before knocking on the window beside the door. When Sgt. Eric Kocheran arrives to assist after about 20 seconds, Mitchell expresses fears for his family’s safety, claiming he has been urged to harm children. In a shocking turn of events, he reveals a firearm, prompting Kocheran to repeatedly urge him to drop the weapon as he himself readies his gun.
The situation escalates rapidly when Mitchell fires a shot, leading Kocheran to return fire from within the building. Multiple shots ring out, and Mitchell ultimately collapses to the ground. The deputy was taken to Grant Medical Center with serious injuries, while Mitchell later succumbed to his wounds at a local hospital. The Ross County Sheriff has requested an investigation by the Ohio BCI into this critical incident.
