A wild high-speed chase unfolded across the greater Houston area when a suspect in a stolen Dodge Hellcat took off from police, reaching astonishing speeds of up to 200 mph. The adrenaline-pumping pursuit began around noon on October 13, 2017, as the driver, Mohmed Ahmed Abu-Shlieba, led officers through traffic, leaving them in his dust. Despite helicopters and various law enforcement agencies, including Texas DPS and Harris County deputies, the Hellcat seemed to be pulling away.
After nearly an hour of intense driving, the suspect exited the freeway at the Winnie exit, only to make a quick stop on Highway 73 south of Beaumont and flee on foot into nearby woods. Officers regrouped and launched a search. In a surprising twist, Abu-Shlieba was spotted walking casually, seemingly unfazed, while on a cell phone call. The chase ended dramatically with a deputy’s flying tackle, and he was subsequently apprehended with the assistance of aerial support.
Abu-Shlieba, 25, was believed to have been armed and was already wanted on multiple charges. What new charges he may face remains unclear.
